Day 15: Halifax

Yesterday we culminated our cross Canada journey with a 100km ride from Lower Sackville to Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

All three teams were together again for one final ride, accompanied by a couple foundation folks including Jeff Rushton, the founder.

Along the way we made a couple of key stops. First, the Swissair flight 111 monument, just off the coast of Peggy’s Cove. A reminder of our short time here on earth and the need to make the most of it.

We then jumped over to Peggy’s Cove where we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and one another’s company for our last “on bike moments” together as a team. One more stop, the most important of the day, was the IWK children’s hospital in Halifax, in order to show the staff our appreciation for everything they do for the kids of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI - these people are magnificent!

Then, to Point Pleasant Park for the finale - the wheel dip!

We arrived at the park and couldn’t believe our eyes when Josh Nelson and his Mom and Dad, Rina and Drew, were waiting there to congratulate us. After all, Josh is our teammate and he deserves to celebrate his first time on a bike in 8 years after fighting cancer. Sears, the title sponsor had arranged to fly them out for the ceremony.

Each rider and volunteer received a medal recognizing the accomplishment. The riders then took our bikes to the edge of the Atlantic ocean.

Now, before started, 15 days ago, we stood on the edge of the Pacific ocean and dipped our back wheels in, then each took a stone from the shore and put it in our pockets.

When we arrived yesterday to the shore of the Atlantic, we took that stone and, together with a stone from the shore we stood, launched them into the water tying the two edges of the country. We then dipped the front wheel of our bikes into the water, signifying the closure of the journey and to ensure we had literally covered end to end with our bikes.

Our mission was quite simple. Raise $1.5M for childhood cancer research and meaningful programs that help children and their families living with and beyond cancer. How we did that was with help from all of our sponsors and donors and by creating awareness in the 190+ communities in Canada that we visited with along the way. Our journey as 2010 National Riders has ended, but our job of ambassadors fighting for the kids will continue on. Thanks to everyone who made it possible for me to by part in making a meaningful difference. Lisa and Ben, you are everything to me. I want to thank you for being with me every step of the way and pulling me up when I was down, pushing me when I was weak and laughing and crying with me all the way across the country.

I love you both “to the moon and back again”!

Ryan

Day 13: Edmunston to Woodstock, New Brunswick!

What a beautiful day!
Started with a dedication to two young local girls, one who had lost her battle last year and the other still fighting.
We left Edmunston with the sun coming up eagerly awaiting a nice hilly ride.
A couple of outstanding Sears stops along our way, Grand Falls and Hartland, hearty soups and snacks at each, and a lunch stop in Perth were just what the doctor ordered for today’s 190km, 1400 meter day.
Thanks everyone!
Beautiful scenery all day along the Saint John river, with 15 km of leg biting rollers capping it all off - doesn’t get any better than this, oh, unless we had Josh and Drew to share it with, but we had a blast just the same.
We still miss you guys!!

In Nova Scotia soon…..gidee up!

Here is the longest covered bridge in the world, 1282 feet, in Hartland New Brunswick.
We made the mistake of sprinting across only to find a treat of a climb on the other side!

Day 12: Trois Riviers to Quebec City

Today we rode for Jesse Morningstar. Jesse’s dad Jason is on team 3 and was a national rider last year and continues to fight for his son and other children suffering from cancer.
Jason you are amazing and you remind me of a hero of mine - my coach Ken Cross (a.k.a. Reg Dunlop, player coach)
This was no ordinary day. This was a day you dream about if you are a cyclist. We rode to the Louis Garneau office in St. Augustine, had lunch with LG himself!
And then, as if life couldn’t possibly get any better, we rode into Quebec City with him!!!
Crazy cool…..still feel like a kid today.
After an incredible welcome at Sears in Quebec City, young Jacob spoke about his diagnosis 2 years ago.
He was so nervous to speak but recognizes he can help others fight harder by showing them you can overcome just about anything.
You’re a great kid Jacob, you remind me of one of my idols, his name is Josh.

Off to New Brunswick…..

Day 11: Kingston to Ottawa

I missed yesterdays blog, my apologies.

Knowing it was our last day with Josh and Drew, we planned for a great day on the bike.
A little after 7:30am, Bruno and Assunta Gallinaro, Lisa’s Zio and Zia, surprised me with a visit.
So nice to see you two, thanks for the support!

We set out just after 8am for a nice hilly ride. Josh was a superstar on the bike. He has been getting stronger each day so we nicknamed him “Legs”.
Way to go Legs!

When we showed up in Ottawa, my cousin Michael was there - so cool!
We had a great chat, a burger and said fairwell. Love you dude!

We rode for Ken’s daughter Megan yesterday. Despite her calling me a “wheel sucker” I still think she is the cutest. You rock Megan!
(Leah, Emma, can you two get her for me? Give her a nuggie)

Off to Trois Riviers…..
